Odd Man Out
Admittedly, most of my posts have leaned toward the positive aspects of my experiences in Russia. To balance that, let me share one of my struggles–something that often threatened to overshadow even the happiest of events. My host Volodya often told a joke about an American who made several trips to Russia, and couldn’t understand why those &*&* Russians only spoke Russian! Of course he was gently pulling my leg (hanging noodles, as they call tall tales and other stretching fabrications). But we all know the grain of truth in humor is what makes us laugh. And I did try…
50 pounds of Russian love
Not to be outdone in the gift-giving department, our friends in Russia have filled both of my suitcases with chocolate and other interesting gifts for us. Here’s a sneak peek. Some of you may even see your name on something or recognize a special request. My goal today is to get the chocolate into the refrigerator. Tomorrow (maybe) I’ll start sorting through it–some to mail–some to deliver. And even some to keep for myself! Isn’t it nice to be remembered this way?
Wrapping it up
My last day in Samara…packing and saying goodbye. Not a fun time for me. Then comes the torture of the long journey home, but the joy of arrival awaits me and for that I can feel glad. The blog will continue with more stories, more pictures, more impressions after I return. Thanks for your faithful participation and keeping us connected. I hope you have received some blessings from my time here. I know I have. I’ll be counting them and being grateful for the peaceful heart that practice offers.
Samara’s future
I showed you the boarding school kids, but I don’t want to give the impression that this is the norm in Russia. Quite the opposite. Children are adored and pampered and indulged here in all the good ways. Most families have only one or two children, so they are extra precious, it seems. Here are some photos of some bright, happy, cherished faces.
